PRx Olympic E-Z Curl Bar Review

My takeBest for Lifters with stiff wrists

My score: 4.5 out of 5

My dad worked construction for 40 years and his wrists don't bend like they used to. The angled grips on this bar let him curl and do arm work he can't do with a straight bar. It takes standard Olympic plates, it's held up with no rust or bend, and it hangs on the same wall storage as the main bar. The catch is it's a specialty bar, not a replacement for your main one.

Buy it if

  • Buy it if straight-bar curls bother your wrists or elbows.
  • Buy it if you already own Olympic plates. It uses the same ones.
  • Buy it if you want arm work in your home gym without adding a machine.

Skip it if

  • Skip it if you need one bar to do everything. This is an add-on.
  • Skip it if you're tight on money. Dumbbells cover a lot of the same work.

Before you buy

What I don't love

It's a specialty bar

It's built for curls and arm work. It won't replace a straight bar for squats, presses or pulls.

Mine showed up with a damaged box

The packaging was torn when it arrived. The bar itself was fine.

Storage is extra

It looks best on PRx's wall hanger, and that's a separate purchase.

Questions I get

How much does the PRx E-Z curl bar weigh?

19 pounds.

How much weight does it hold?

PRx rates it to 330 lb. If you're curling that, I'd like to hear about it.

Does it fit Olympic plates?

Yes. It has standard Olympic sleeves.

Is an E-Z bar easier on your wrists?

For my dad it is. The angled grips put your hands in a more natural position than a straight bar.

Who this bar is for

The PRx Olympic E-Z Curl Bar is for somebody whose wrists don't love a straight bar, or anybody who wants to do arm work at home without adding a machine.

It's a specialty bar. It's built for curls and arm work, and it's not going to replace your main bar for squats and presses. Think of it as the second bar you buy.

Why my dad needed one

This bar is in my parents' home gym. Having a curl bar was super important to me when we set that gym up, and my dad is the reason.

He worked construction for 40 years, and his wrist mobility isn't what it could be. The curves in the bar let him change his grip, and that helps with his range of motion and with the lifts he can actually do.

It gets a lot of use over there.

What I think of it

I've used it and I think it's great. When I made the one-month video I didn't have a curl bar at my own gym, and I wanted to steal this one from my folks. I left it for my dad.

Back in the day, when I was doing straight bodybuilding stuff for wrestling, I wanted big arms and a curl bar was awesome for that. If nothing else, it made you feel strong, because it was curled, so it almost felt like you bent the bar.

And who doesn't like doing some curls to look good in a t-shirt?

What you can do with it

It's good for all kinds of curls, and for a close grip. It's also good for skull crushers and other tricep work. On day one I did some curls and some overhead work with it and it felt good in my hands.

It has standard size sleeves, so it fits Olympic plates. If you already own plates for your main bar, you use the same ones. I loaded it up with the big bumper plates just to make it look like I was curling a lot of weight.

The specs

It's a 19 pound bar. The total length is 47 1/2 inches, the bar itself is 33.25 inches, and the sleeves are 6 1/2 inches long and 1.96 inches in diameter.

The knurling is a medium, and it feels pretty good. The finish is hard chrome.

PRx rates it to 330 pounds. If you're hitting that on your curls, please let me know. I will be super impressed.

Out of the box

The packaging was a little damaged when it showed up. The top of the box ripped right off. The bar inside was fine.

There's nothing to put together. You pull the plastic off and it's ready to go. It's a basic curl bar, with the PRx branding on the end, and it looks sharp.

Where it lives

One of my favorite things about the whole PRx lineup is the organization they have for their equipment. The curl bar hangs on the same wall rack as the straight bar. It fits right in there.

That keeps both bars up out of the way, and they look good hanging there. PRx sells the bar storage in different sizes, and it's a separate purchase.

How it's held up and would I buy it again

In my six-month video I said I'd had it just over six months. It's a solid bar, made well, and I have no complaints with it whatsoever.

Would I buy it again? Yes, for my dad, without question. If a straight bar bothers your wrists, or you just want to do curls and skull crushers the comfortable way, it's a good addition to a home gym. If you need one bar to do everything, buy your main bar first.
